On 5 January 1992, Lewis and Dr Otto Thaning became the first swimmers to swim across a Great African Lake, namely Lake Malawi. The 25km swim was completed in 9 hours 52 minutes. Hundreds of locals paddled into the Lake to escort Lewis and Otto over the final kilometers of the swim. While the Lake is inhabited by numerous hippopotamus and crocodiles, no problems were encountered on the swim

On 2 October 1992, Lewis and Dr Otto Thaning smashed the record for swimming around Robben Island by 2 hours 20 minutes. The 11km swim was completed in 4 hours 10 minutes. Robben Island is situated off Cape Town, South Africa and is where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned.

On 17 September 1990, Lewis became the first person to swim around the Cape of Good Hope from east to west. This famous landmark, about 100km south of Cape Town in South Africa, was named the "Cape of Storms" by Portuguese explorer Bartholomew Diaz. Lewis battled fierce waves to finish the 5km swim in 1 hour 30 minutes.
