Fjordswim
The longest cold water swim in the world

Lewis Gordon Pugh (Exp.Leader)
In 26th of July, long distance swimmer, Lewis Gordon Pugh, will attempt to break the record for the longest cold water swim in the world, by swimming 204 km down Sognefjord, in Norway. Sognefjord is the longest and deepest fjord in the world. The water is icy cold at the top of the fjord, as it flows straight off the glaciers in the nearby Jostedalsbreen National Park. Nearer the coast the water warms up with the inflow of sea water from the North Sea. Lewis will start his swim in the village of Skjolden, where the water temperature is expected to be a chilly 10 degrees. The swim will end in the small harbour at Eivindvik. At the finish, it is hoped the water will be about 18 degrees. The swim will be conducted according to the English Channel Swimming Association Rules. Accordingly, Lewis will only wear a swimming costume and a cap. He will not wear a wetsuit.

Lewis Gordon Pugh (Exp.Leader)
On 6 August 2003, Lewis became the first person to swim around North Cape in Norway. This famous landmark is situated at 71 degrees north and is the most northern point in Europe. The 5km swim was completed in 1 hour 4 minutes. The water was 8 degrees and no wetsuit or dry suit was used. Lewis was severely hypothermic when he finished the swim. The swim broke the world record for the "Most Northern Long Distance Swim in the World". The previous record had been held by the American swimmer Lynne Cox, who swam a section of the Bering Straits between Alaska and Russia. The North Cape swim was also the first long distance swim north of the Arctic Circle. It was filmed by a number of TV crews including National Geographic who produced a documentary on the endeavour entitled "Swimming Norway".

Gilles Elkaim (Exp.Leader)
For the first time in the history of polar exploration, an expedition is launched with the challenge of linking the North Cape to the Bering Strait, crossing the whole of the Continental Arctic via the Eurasian coastline and using traditional modes of trasport. This savage and unprecedented route of over 10 000 km will take us on foot, by kayak, on skis, by reindeer and dog driven sleds from the Atlantic to the Pacific, comprising a 3 year journey above the polar circle.
