THE RECORD
|

|
It is without doubt, definitely Eirik Sønneland (25, Norway) and Rolf
Bae (25, Norway), with their 3800 km long crossing of Antarctica on
ski. They did this during the 2000 – 2001 season. Started from the
Troll Station/Dronning Mauds Land – South Pole – McMurdo (by Axel
Heiberg Glacier)
But, the story starts one year earlier, when they joined the Norwegian
Polar Institute (NPI) on their annual travel down to Troll Station.
Through the Austral summer they participated in the NPI fieldwork.
When the Polar Institute left in late February 2000, Rolf and Eirik,
their technician Frode and Dr. Gunnar Børre were prepared for the
first Norwegian over-winter stay through 40 years. So they did, with
great success, and carried through lot’s of monitoring and testing
work for the NPI. (Important experience for NPI, when they have been
preparing for launch of an all year station from February 2005) After
a long winter at Troll, Eirik and Rolf left the station, 21st of
October 2000. 105 days later they arrived at McMurdo station as the
second expedition to cross Antarctica unsupported, but with a very
good world record.
