DOCUMENTATION OF THE EXPEDITION

A WORD FROM THE EXPEDITION BOOK AUTHOR
Jon Michelett

At the present, I am working on a book about the G2 expedition. It's written in Norwegian and meant for publication with a major Oslo publisher. Negotioations for publication abroad are going well, and hopefylly the book will appear in Danish and Italian editions.

We have seen many expedition books in Norway recently, covering daring exploits of the poles, south and north, and mountains worldwide. It is possible to speak of a mainstream of Norwegian expedition books. I intend to write a somewhat different story, using the fact that I was an outside observer, not a participant on the long trek across Greenland, or Kalaallit Nunaat as the Greenlanders call the world's largest island.

Why did Rune and Torry start out on the longest ski journey in history? How come the medical tests after the trip showed two guys in extremely good shape, having lost almost no body weight? What was their training, equipment, food? I'll try to answer questions like these. But my book is also going to tell something about Greenland, is desolate beauty and its unsolved historical mysteries. I had the opportunity to follow Rune and Torry closely on the expedition's kayak leg in Southern Greenland, an area affectionately called Banana Coast by the local Inuit people, but looking pretty tough even to hardy Norwegians. Also, I had the pleasure to fly in as a part of the pick-up team and get the boys out from Kap Morris Jesup in the extreme north.

All together, I do think I have some exiting stories to tell. My ambition is to make a renewal of Norwegian polar litterature. Even if I do not succeed in such a lofty project, I hope the book about G2 might be good fun both for armchair adventurers and the normal crazy pack of professional polar wolves.

(Books by Mr. Michelet have been translated into English, German, Spanish, Japanese, Dutch and other languages. One of his novels, Orions's Belt, about the Norwegian Arctic archipelago of Svalbard has been filmed on location, and copied by video-pirates in Far East countries like Vietnam.)

G2 SLIDES SHOW

Gjeldnes and Larsen are now preparing their slides show and lectures about their expedition adventure for this fall. They plan to start this tour in October, for the most in Norway, but also abroad. This will be a great multi-vision adventure, but also lectures for companies and Military use.
